September 2022 at Oyster Bay Yoga

Intention

Dear Oyster Bay Yogis,

Happy September! Tis’ the season to REFOCUS. As we kiss summer goodbye, what do we want to cultivate? What are our hopes for the fall, and beyond? What’s been missing from your routine? How can your practice serve you better? How can WE help you create more of what you want in your life? I’m all ears :) Myself and the other instructors will be prompting you to set an intention for your practice, your month, your life. Sometimes, we never get where we want to go, because we get stuck in the cycle of reacting to our lives, without thoughtfulness, planning, or any flexibility! Let’s break that cycle together.

See you on the mat!

Amy

Pose of the Month

Balasana: Child’s Pose

Sutra of the Month

Patanjali teaches that yoga practice is preventive medicine for our minds—a way to keep future pain and suffering from manifesting. He reminds us that past pain doesn’t exist anymore, current pain is in process and will run its course, and future pain can be diminished or avoided altogether by committing to the yogic lifestyle.

Oil of the Month

Our September OOTM is:

Ho Wood

“Ho Wood Oil is steam distilled from the bark and wood of the ho tree. This oil is extremely high in calming linalool and is excellent for promoting a peaceful and relaxing environment. Ho Wood has a woody, floral, and camphorous scent. Its aroma and properties are very similar to Rosewood Oil, which as a threatened species, should be avoided. The camphor content in Ho Wood Oil results in a cooling feeling when used topically.”

August 2022 at Oyster Bay Yoga

Balance

Dear Oyster Bay Yogis,

Happy August! As soon as I hear the word August, I automatically think, “oh no, the end of the summer!” I feel that pressure to make the most of the great weather, and all of the opportunities for activity, travel, family & friendship it brings. And at the same time, I start to kick myself for falling out of routine with my self care. It’s a catch 22! Remember, the studio will always be here for you. Our collective special place to gather and take care of our bodies and minds. You’re not alone if the end of the summer forces you out of routine, so this month, let’s focus on balance! Literally, we’ll work on some standing balance postures (I’m focusing on Eagle in my classes), and let’s think balance off the mat, too. Find some yin to your summer yang, or vice versa. If you always take vigorous vinyasa classes, consider trying out a restorative. If you’ve been having a little too much fun outside of your practice, come see me for a yoga fit! If your schedule’s booked with summertime fun, pop onto a livestream while you’re traveling, or if you’ve been stuck inside at work, get outside with us and enjoy the end of the season with some outdoor classes!

See you on the mat!

Amy

Pose of the Month

Garudasana: Eagle Pose

Sutra of the Month

Sthira translates to strength and stability. Sukha is flexibility and openness, and asanam is the asana, or the seat. Simply stated, the yoga pose should be steady and yet comfortable. This sutra insists that the way you approach your yoga practice is what counts; and that when you lose your sense of steadiness and ease, you’ve gone too far. These two forces are how we gauge our practice. Are we breathing easily throughout our yoga asanas, or are we holding our breath and powering through the motions? A balanace of sthira-sukham is personal and ever-changing, as there are no set rules for achieving this, and can be difficult because it requires a person to balance these two opposing forces. Where can you find the place between your effort and ease, on and off your mat?

Tapas

Dear Oyster Bay Yogis,

Happy July! The heat is on! This month we'll be exploring the concept of Tapas (not the Spanish appetizer), but rather "purification through intensity, or heat." All we need do is walk outside in July to feel the heat, but we'll be generating some heat on our mats too. This is yoga in ACTION. We're riding the heat wave, and coming out more like ourselves, and more connected to our higher Self on the other side. Don't shy away from the challenging bits this month. You can do it - we can do it together!

Keep reading to check out our upcoming events, as well as our oil, sutra & promo of the month (at your request, you can pre-order some logo gear)!

Plus, check out our monthly challenge winner.

See you on the mat!

Amy

Pose of the Month

Vasisthasana: Side Plank

Sutra of the Month

Yoga is comprised of these three elements (tapas, svadhyaya, and Ishvara pranidhana). Tapas helps us assess our physical capacity. Svadhyaya allows us to study the "self" and our mental ability and intellectual grasp. Ishvara pranidhana allows us to see the depth of our emotional maturity. Through our yoga practices, we are able to see our strengths and weaknesses within these three groupings. As we move, we cultivate a higher degree of endurance and fire from within.

Oil of the Month

Our July OOTM is:

Eucalyptus

“Organic Eucalyptus Globulus is an essential oil that is very familiar to the world of oils and is used often. Its strong, aromatic scent makes this a favorite one to use for respiratory support.

Organic Eucalyptus Globulus has a very herbaceous scent with soft woody undertones. Originating in India and steam distilled from the leaves of the Eucalyptus tree, Organic Eucalyptus Globulus is 100% pure with no fillers or additives and is an essential oil that is a great asset to have on hand. Blends well with Basil, Cajeput, Cedarwood, Citronella, Frankincense, Ginger, Lavender, Lemon, Spearmint and Tea Tree. Whether it is being used to support aching muscles, promoting a healthy circulation, or stimulating mental focus, this is an oil that is powerful and effective.”

June 2022 at Oyster Bay Yoga

Member Appreciation Month

Dear Oyster Bay Yogis,

This month, we’re celebrating YOU! June is Member Appreciation Month.

Can you believe Oyster Bay Yoga is going to be 6 years old this month? (Glen Cove is turning 3 in October, too). I was reminiscing about our pre-Covid anniversary parties. It was always such a special day for me - an opportunity to spend quality time off the mat with my favorite people, and celebrate our collective dedication to our practice, our well-being, and our community! It’s been two years since we’ve been able to gather in that way, and this year I thought we’d do it a little differently - stay tuned for full details, but save the date for Sunday June 26th.

In addition to our party in OB, I’ve got some pop-up special treats for you throughout the month at both locations, before/after a few of our regularly scheduled classes. Check out the calendar here for a hint on which classes might receive some treats!

Plus, if you’re a member at either location, we’re giving you a free guest pass to be used during the month of June - BYO yoga buddy. Just reply to this email and let us know who you want to bring to which class and we’ll make sure they’ve got a spot.

Other good news, outdoor yoga at Mill Neck Manor is back! Keep reading for the dates & times.

Our pose of the month and oil of the month are crowd favorites too!

Shout out to our monthly challenge winner, and our special May Yoga Roots challenge winners - scroll down to see who won!

Be well!

Amy

Pose of the Month

Ardha Chandrasana (Half Moon Pose)

Sutra of the Month

When we practice aparigraha, non-hoarding, non-possessiveness, we keep only what is needed and no more. In practicing aparigraha, we aspire to be free from attachment in word, thought, and deed. This includes not striving after, accumulating and clinging to unnecessary things. This applies not only to material things like money, possessions, and gifts, but also with intangibles such as pleasurable feelings, validation, attention, assistance, accomplishment, power, and control.

Although it can be frightening at first to think about letting go of things we’ve been conditioned to believe we need to be happy, much freedom can be found in the releasing. By letting go of things that no longer serve us, we make more space for what is useful and helpful. Only through the direct experience of letting go can we discover that we already have everything needed inside of us, just waiting to be uncovered.

Oil of the Month

Our June OOTM is:

Tranquil

“The oils in this beautiful blend help to reduce worry and its effects. This wonderful blend assists you to achieve mental relaxation, helping you to feel more at ease and bringing about a sense of well-being.”

The Beginner’s Mind

Dear Oyster Bay Yogis,

Happy May! Do you remember your first yoga class? Maybe it was last month, or maybe it was 30 years ago. But can you reflect on how you felt in your early days of practicing? What’s changed? If you’re still practicing, then there’s still that passion for movement, breath, connection & embodiment you fell in love with early on in your practice, but it can become clouded over the years with the challenges we all face in this wild world. This month, can we reignite our beginner’s mind? The routine of the practice is a part of the discipline, and I won’t ask you to unlearn everything, but I will ask you to go back to the early days of your practice in your mind, and see if you can bring that freshness with you. Need a little inspiration? Hang out with Owen (or your nearest toddler) for an hour and you’ll remember the JOY of learning something for the first time! As a little incentive to walk back to the start of the path, this month, if you attend 8 or more Yoga Roots classes, I’ll have a little surprise waiting for you at the front desk.

Be well!

Amy

Pose of the Month

Adho Mukha Svanasana: Downward Facing Dog

In my classes this month we’ll be focusing on arm balancing, specifically Bakasana (Crow Pose)! Practice the technique of this posture along with me in this video, and then in your full practices, see if you can settle into the alignment and then shift your attention to a single point of focus, like your drishti, or your breath.

Sutra of the Month

Have you ever found yourself straying from your yoga practice and a voice pops into your head telling you, “I really need to get back to yoga”? Or have you ever begun a meditation practice only to leave it within a few weeks (or days)? You are certainly not alone. Your body and mind know that yoga makes you feel good in so many ways. Discipline is a very important aspect to yoga. Showing up to practice on a regular basis without break. The real benefits of the practice are revealed when we dedicate ourselves to the practice long-term. In order to sustain these good feelings, our practice needs to be consistent. Whether we show up to our mat for 5 minutes or 1 hour, the commitment to come back to your mat regularly is what will make the most difference.

Oil of the Month

Our May OOTM is:

Honeybell

“This delightful and vibrant synergy has an aroma of a sparkling citrus bouquet with a green, fruity splash and woody background. It is uplifting and calming with the juicy-fresh citrus scents of Orange and Grapefruit and the sweet green scent of Lime Steam Distilled.

Cognac adds an additional fresh, fruity aspect, while Galbanum and Buchu round out the aroma with a hint of woody and herbaceous undertones.” -Plant Therapy

This month, enjoy 20% off your purchase of Honeybell essential oil at the studios.
