Self Care

Dear Oyster Bay Yogis,

Happy April! Inspired by that feeling of spring renewal in the air, this month’s theme at the studios is “Self Care.” As you remain committed to your practice, you’ll find that yoga, when you approach it in a particular way, is one of the best forms of self care out there. When we practice yoga we become aware of what we need on a daily basis, physically, mentally, and emotionally. With that awareness, we can implement the tools of yoga that will help serve our highest needs. Some days we need to be still, some days we need to MOVE. Some days we need solitude, some days we need community. Some days we practice yoga on the mat, and some days life requires us to take what we’ve learned off the mat. This is not to say we should have a scattered approach to our practice. Yoga, after all, is a discipline. However the fruits of our disciplined practice include the ability to deploy the skills and tools that yoga teaches us at the right time so that from all of this awareness we’re practicing, we feel we’re able to care for ourselves. How empowering!

In the remainder of the newsletter, you’ll see our oil of the month, our monthly challenge winner, and all of the exciting events we have planned for you this month. Hope to see you all very soon at the studios, or online!

See you very soon,

Amy

Pose of the Month

Sirsasana (Headstand Pose)

In my classes this month we’ll be focusing on arm balancing, specifically Bakasana (Crow Pose)! Practice the technique of this posture along with me in this video, and then in your full practices, see if you can settle into the alignment and then shift your attention to a single point of focus, like your drishti, or your breath.

Sutra of the Month

What or who is the seer? It is the soul. In our current state of the mind, the soul is confusing itself with the ego. As we are constantly changing, the mind is always fluctuating. Once we are able to calm the fluctuations of the mind, our perception of reality becomes clear. No longer clouded with thoughts of the past or the future, reality sharpens and we finally understand our true nature. This is the union of Yoga; when the fluctuations of the mind are stilled, revealing pure consciousness or awareness. We unite with our true Self.

Oil of the Month

Our April OOTM is:

Organic Roman Chamomile

“Organic Roman Chamomile is steam distilled from the flowers of the small Chamaemelum nobile perennial to create a sweet, "green," herbaceous apple-like scent.

The powerful, sweet scent is a favorite among essential oil users to help ease children and adults to sleep. This oil is soothing and gentle, making it safe for kids when diluted properly. Diffuse before bedtime, apply topically using your favorite Plant Therapy carrier oil, or add to a warm nighttime bath to promote relaxation and a restful, refreshing night of sleep.

Organic Roman Chamomile helps to ease tired muscles after strenuous exercise and aching joints due to aging.” -Plant Therapy

Healing Through the Chakra System:

CHAKRA ONE Muladhara

Crossing the Rainbow Bridge

Sunday, April 3rd

4:00-5:30pm

with Maru Duran

at Glen Cove Yoga

Are you ready to start your alchemical journey into a more whole version of yourself? Are you ready to heal the wounds of your body and psyche so you can feel more balanced and energized, and be more present for yourself and others? If so, join Maru on this healing expedition through the main energy centers (chakras) of your body, an ancient reinvigorating exploration known as Crossing the Rainbow Bridge

After our first class of this series, where we were introduced to the chakra system, we are now ready to move up the spine and deep-dive into each energy center.

This class will concentrate on the first chakra, Muladhara, where we will learn about it, feel/ experience it, and heal it by exploring personal wounds and blocks.

We will start by learning what this chakra is all about, what affects its vitality, and how we can actively help this wheel of energy back to a balanced state (20-minute discussion). Right after, Maru will guide the class through a meditation to feel and open the Muladhara chakra (5-10 minutes). While in this inward state, the teacher will share writing prompts that will help you identify personal blockages that affect the health of this center (20 minutes). We encourage you to write down whatever comes up for you, so you can consciously work on these issues in your everyday life. We will end the session with a yoga class (45 minutes), which will concentrate on opening and balancing the first chakra.

Expect to leave this class with a clear understanding of the Muladhara chakra, a personal identification of what is causing imbalance in this area for you, and homework to work on your everyday life to bring this chakra back to a balanced state. After this class you can expect to feel grounded and protected.

Dear Oyster Bay Yogis,

Happy March! Happy Spring! We’ve got a lot of great stuff in store for you at the studios this month. Our theme is “Manifestation.” Let’s use the tools of yoga to help us bring goodness into our lives. Lord knows we need it! Let’s see what the collective power of our thoughts, words, and actions can achieve. Better boundaries? Yoga helps. Strength? Flexibility? Healthy body & mind? Yoga helps. Stress relief? Better sleep? Yoga helps. What do you need, and how can yoga help you move in that direction? Talk to your teachers! We are ALL here because we want to help you stay committed to your practice, and reap the rewards.

If you’re manifesting some arm balances for yourself, come see me in classes! Our pose of the month is Bakasana, crow pose.

Want to be a ballerina? Come to an AWESOME workshop on the 11th and live those dreams.

Practice the technique of this posture along with me in this video, and then in your full practices, see if you can settle into the alignment and then shift your attention to a single point of focus, like your drishti, or your breath.

Sutra of the Month

According to Patanjali, practice means making an effort to stay “there.” “There” means the realm of consciousness where truth, the absolute reality, resides in its pristine form. The practice that enables you to gain inner stability, that takes you inside, that introduces you to yourself, that eliminates all obstacles, and finally, that makes you see and embrace the truth directly—that alone is practice. When you find something you are truly curious about, your attention can focus with great precision and unwavering energy.

Oil of the Month

Our March OOTM is:

Self Manifestation

“The 3rd (Solar Plexus) Chakra is the point of our personal power. When suppressed we feel powerless, but when expressed we experience our strength of purpose.

This can lead to liberation, transformation, and manifestation of our own unique and distinct identity. In authentic self-empowerment, we experience autonomy supported by our sense of self-definition and self-worth while remaining in harmony with others through compassion and caring.

“This synergy is called Self Manifestation and is made with the 100% pure, undiluted essential oils of Black Pepper, Cardamom, Davana, and Pink Grapefruit. It has a softly sweet punch of power and spice.

Self Manifestation helps to quiet the mind so that we may go inward to tap into our own sense of self-definition and autonomy with clarity. This strengthens our sense of self-empowerment with enthusiasm, stamina, and motivation. It nourishes our sense of self-worth with courage, confidence, and optimism. It also invites positive, cleansing energy to support manifestation of our purpose, while encouraging warmth and graciousness toward others. ” -Plant Therapy

Introduction to Beginner Adult Ballet

Friday, March 11th

7:00-9:00pm

at Oyster Bay Yoga

with Tabitha Alessi

Ever since the pandemic, people are looking at life in a new perspective. We want experiences that don’t involve zoom, but something that feeds the soul.

Do you want to move your body, have fun and be active? Then a basic beginner ballet class is for you.

You do not need to be able to do splits! This is not a competition. If you have never tried ballet, do not be intimidated. This is a friendly environment, and ALL are welcome.

All you need are grippy socks and comfortable athletic attire.

First half of class. We start with a little stretching. Then, with both hands on the ballet barre we warm up our bodies, focusing on our legs. The barre helps us feel balanced while engaging your core. Barre work helps improve your posture, all over strength and prepares you for center work.

Second half of class. This is when we introduce our upper body and arms, connecting with leg strength. In many ways, repeating what we did at barre, now in the center of the studio. Some jumps, waltzing and moving freely. This is the fun part where we really get to move and dance!

Did you always want to be a prima ballerina? Now is your chance to feel like one!

I promise everyone will leave class feeling taller, stronger, and of course happy.

$40 per person (10% off for OBY/GCY/Dual Studio Members)

About Tabitha

In 2007 I danced for my first professional ballet company Atlanta Ballet. After dancing with several other companies, I landed a principal position with the Charleston Ballet Theater. I've had the privilege of traveling the world, guest appearing with artists like Janelle Monáe, performing multiple Balanchine ballets, and principal roles like Cinderella. While dancing professionally I also dedicated my time as a ballet mistress for a performing arts program orchestrating productions like The Nutcracker and Peter Pan. By age 27 I was promoted to Artistic Director, working with a cast of over 40 dancers ages 5 to 65. After a lifetime of disciplined training and over a decade of teaching experience I am now a nutrition major, Pilates instructor, and of course ballet teacher.

40 Day Kundalini Sadhana

Join Martha Flanagan for the next 40 day Sadhana. Sadhana means a daily practice, which can be a meditation, mantra, prayer, yoga practice or self-inquiry. The aim of such practices is to realize you are not who you think you are or who you believe yourself to be.

In the yogic sciences, there is a saying. “Your habits define you.” The problems in life come from our habits. The only difference is how people act. Our actions come from our habits”. (3HO)

40 Days: Practice every day for 40 days straight. This will break any negative habits that block you from the expansion possible through the kriya or mantra.

In this next 40 days we will do “Kirtan Kriya”. (Pronounced keeertan) This kriya has been researched with The Alzheimer’s Research and Prevention Foundation. When practiced correctly for just 11 minutes daily can improve cognition and parts of the brain central to memory.

Martha will be introducing the Sadhana on Sunday 3/13 In class at Oyster Bay Yoga.

Focus

Dear Oyster Bay Yogis,

Happy February! Our theme of the month is “Focus!” Focus is the first step toward meditation, and ultimately, samadhi or enlightenment. In our practice we move from many points of focus (vrttis), to one point of focus (dharana), and eventually, into a state of meditation (dhyana). Remember, Patanjali tells us that yoga is the quieting of the fluctuations of the mind (yogas chitta vrtti nirodhah). We use the tools of yoga on the mat, asana and pranayama, and drishti to focus our attention, and make ourselves more ready, more receptive to peaceful stillness in the mind. With dedication, and focused, regular effort, these moments of peaceful stillness become easier to find among the craziness of daily life.

“Practice, and all is coming!”-Sri K Pattabhi Jois

In the remainder of the newsletter, you’ll see our oil of the month, our first monthly challenge winner of the year, and all of the exciting events we have planned for you this month. Hope to see you all very soon at the studios, or online!

With love,

Amy

Pose of the Month

Virabhadrasana III

In my classes this month we’ll be focusing on standing balancing poses, among which will be warrior 3. Practice the technique of this posture along with me in this video, and then in your full practices, see if you can settle into the alignment and then shift your attention to a single point of focus, like your drishti, or your breath.

Sutra of the Month

Here, Patanjali is outlining his suggestions for cultivating one-pointedness in the mind, and thus, calmness of the mind. There is no progression here, just a variety of options to try, outlined to help each individual achieve calmness of mind. Give each of them a try this month!

Oil of the Month

Our February OOTM is:

Loving Compassion (Heart Chakra)

“The 4th (Heart) Chakra is the center of our ability to offer unconditional love and acceptance to ourselves and others. This chakra can be easily and deeply wounded, affecting the wellbeing of our whole being. Healing our own hearts allows us to help heal the world around us. When we are able to love ourselves for who we are, we can offer love to others seeing them in their own humanity with compassion, acceptance, and kindness. Comforting and calming, this synergy helps to ease wounds of the heart and nourish the spirit. It helps to clear and cleanse deep wounds and blocks, while opening and uplifting the heart center. Loving Compassion invites positive energy and encourages a joyful outlook and outward connection, and promotes unconditional love for self and others with compassion and acceptance.” -Plant Therapy

Introduction to the Indian Wisdom of the 7 Chakras

Sunday, February 27th

4:00-5:30pm

with Maru Duran

at Glen Cove Yoga

Do you want to understand how your energy body works? Learn how to harmonize your nervous system by identifying and healing blocks and wounds? If so, we would love to have you join us as we learn and directly experience the chakra system.

You are MORE than just a physical body. In fact, your physical body is just a reflection of your energy body, since our cells are mostly empty space! Your energy body determines how you feel, how people respond to you, and literally creates your reality.

This first class is an introduction to the Indian wisdom of the 7 chakras (energy centers). It will explain how the health of your energy body affects every part of your life. We will learn about the chakra system (45 minutes), experience it through a guided meditation (15 minutes), and then practice a yoga class that will stimulate and balance the chakras (30 minutes). Expect to leave feeling balanced, and with an understanding of what the chakra system is and how it works.

The classes following this one will be focused on each individual chakra. We will deep-dive on the chakra of the month, learn about it, identify personal blockages through writing prompts, and feel it in our bodies through guided meditation and yoga (asana) practice focused on that chakra.

The series of classes will empower you to heal blockages in your energy body, regain your balance in areas of your life that need attention, and gain a deeper appreciation for yourself and others. These classes will give you a greater level of self mastery and an ability to heal, and a deeper understanding of HOW the health of your energetic body is creating your reality.

We encourage individuals who are excited about developing self mastery and inner healing abilities to participate!

Are you ready to join me on the journey within?

Myself and the teachers have planned some really great new classes, workshops & programs for you this winter, but I’d love to hear from you: What do you want to learn this year? How do you want to feel? Reply to this email and share it with me so we can make it happen for you at the studios.

Our theme of the month is “Slow & Steady.” I’m talking about “The Tortoise and the Hare,” of course. In my enthusiasm for goal setting and challenges I tend to become the proverbial hare this time of year. So, as a reminder to myself, and to all of us, let’s think a little longer term about what we want to cultivate in our lives, and try not to do the ol’ February crash and burn. Myself and the other teachers will show you what slow & steady feels like on the mat, so that we can carry that feeling with us for the remainder of the year.

Namaste,

Amy

21 Day Meditation Challenge

They say it takes 21 days to form a habit

Let’s use the first 21 days of 2022 to form a meditation practice that will serve us throughout the entire year.

What does it feel like inside your mind right now? Do your thoughts run wild throughout your day? Do you feel like you don’t have any control over what happens inside your mind?

Meditation can absolutely help us clear our minds more efficiently, but it can also help us cope with, and even reframe any distressing, pervasive thinking.

Do you feel like you CAN’T meditate? Well, let me ask you this: Can you think of any time in your life when you felt completely absorbed in a task? (your work? your studies? your yard work?) Perhaps it was something enjoyable, or something repetitive (folding laundry? going for a run?). And when you were absorbed in this tasks, do you remember having a feeling of forgetting everything else? A sense of time moving more quickly? It feels really good when we stumble upon these moments of meditation in our everyday lives, right? Those moments of being completely absorbed ARE a state of meditation. We all CAN do it. However, when we sit down to TRY to meditate, oftentimes our mind picks back up its incessant chatter.

We know we WANT to get into a state of meditation, and we WANT to have that feeling of timelessness, but anything worth doing takes practice. Through this program we’ll create the routine, and train our brains to find stillness (just like you train your abs at the gym). There’s also power in togetherness. So, let’s let’s do this together, and support each other in our commitment to cultivating more peace and ease in our inner worlds. What could be more important than that?

What to expect

Week 1:

Find Your Rhythm

Learn to guide yourself into a state of meditation through simple cues you can easily learn and repeat each time you sit down to meditate.

Week 2:

Refine Your Intention

Now that you’ve found your rhythm, and feel more comfortable entering a state of meditation, you can begin to clarify and refine your intention for meditating. How we approach our meditation will impact what we receive from the practice.

Week 3:

Discover Your Center

Now that you’ve learned how to enter a state of meditation, and you’ve settled into your intention, learn to center, and re-center as you lengthen sitting time, and cultivate stillness and inner-peace.

Register for the Challenge

Each week includes 6 pre-recorded meditations you can practice at your own pace. Choose a time that works best for you. The 7th meditation each week will be “live” with Amy on a Zoom call at 7am. You can join in live, or you can watch the recording of the live meditation practice anytime.

No experience required. No special equipment required. Listen in from any device.

Starting January 2nd through 22nd. $48 to join

Rest

Dear Oyster Bay Yogis,

Happy December! It’s hibernation season, as I like to say, so this month I’ve chosen “Rest,” as our theme. I hope that the studios will be a haven for you in the business of the holiday season. Why rest? Because relaxation is a SKILL. We must carve out time to practice resting, finding stillness in the body and the mind, so that we can fully receive the benefits of our time on the mat. Let’s try letting go of the need to rush from one thing to the next, and stop confusing busyness with productivity or achievement. In my classes, we’ll be taking extended savasana. Notice what that brings up? Are you in the “woohoo I love savasana give me more,” camp or are you in the “oh no I can’t do LONGER savasana or I’ll explode” camp? Everyone responds differently to stillness, but I promise, especially if you’re in the second camp, as with everything, it get’s easier with practice! Come to the studio, or practice online. Carve out the space in your schedule and the space in your mind and RECEIVE the benefits of some well-deserved rest.

In the remainder of our newsletter you’ll see our Pose of the Month, Sutra of the Month, Oil of the Month, and Monthly Challenge Winner for November. Plus a full listing of the upcoming events. I look forward to seeing you again at the studio very soon.

Wishing you and your family happy holidays and a peaceful new year,

Amy

Gratitude

Dear Oyster Bay Yogis,

Happy November! This month’s theme is “Gratitude.” Tony Robbins says that we can’t be grateful and angry at the same time. So, this month, let’s put that into our yoga practice, and see if we can embody gratitude for the goodness in our lives. It’s the feeling, or the emotion of gratitude that’s important. And, like anything else worth pursuing, repetition and ritual are important. Each time you arrive on your mat, or as you rest in your savasana, consider something, big or small, that you FEEL grateful for, sit with that good feeling, take it with you off of your mat, and share it with others! You CAN do this while still honoring what’s difficult, and uncomfortable (that’s what yoga is all about baby).

In the remainder of our newsletter you’ll see our Pose of the Month, Sutra of the Month, Oil of the Month, and Monthly Challenge Winner for October. Plus a full listing of the upcoming events. I look forward to seeing you again at the studio very soon.

Namaste,

Amy

Sutra of the Month

The yama of asteya calls us to cultivate a way of being in the world that’s so full of gratitude and abundance that the idea of stealing—or taking excess of any kind—isn’t even imaginable. What if, instead of moving through the world focused on what we can get, we constantly asked ourselves what we can give?
