January 2022 at Oyster Bay Yoga

Slow & Steady

Dear Oyster Bay Yogis,

Happy New Year! After the uncertainty of the past 2 years, I’m feeling particularly grateful to be able to continue teaching, and practicing, with all of you. Cheers to a peaceful, exciting, healthy, happy 2022 for each and every one of you!

I hope the studios will continue to be your special, sacred space to take care of yourself. I hope you always feel at home when you walk through the door and roll out your mat.

Myself and the teachers have planned some really great new classes, workshops & programs for you this winter, but I’d love to hear from you: What do you want to learn this year? How do you want to feel? Reply to this email and share it with me so we can make it happen for you at the studios.

Our theme of the month is “Slow & Steady.” I’m talking about “The Tortoise and the Hare,” of course. In my enthusiasm for goal setting and challenges I tend to become the proverbial hare this time of year. So, as a reminder to myself, and to all of us, let’s think a little longer term about what we want to cultivate in our lives, and try not to do the ol’ February crash and burn. Myself and the other teachers will show you what slow & steady feels like on the mat, so that we can carry that feeling with us for the remainder of the year.

Namaste,

Amy

Pose of the Month

Virabhadrasana II

Our pose this month is Virabhadrasana 2, or Warrior 2! This standing posture is good for strengthening and stretching the legs and ankles. It also stimulates the abdominal organs and relieves backaches.

Sutra of the Month

Oil of the Month

Our January OOTM is:

Bergamot Mint

“Uplift your spirits with the refreshing scents of Bergamot Mint Essential Oil. When you smell Bergamot Mint, it resembles a mixture of fresh citrus, floral lavender, and refreshing mint. There are many benefits of Bergamot Mint. Most notably, it is used to help calm and relax the senses while also helping boost motivation and inspiration in your daily life. Even though it is a calming oil, it is not as sedating as others, making it a good choice to use throughout the day when you need to stay productive. In addition, you can use Bergamot Mint Essential Oil to help clear congestion, support an overall healthy immune system and even ease digestive upset.” -Plant Therapy

This month, enjoy 20% off your purchase of Bergamot Mint essential oil at the studios.

21 Day Meditation Challenge

They say it takes 21 days to form a habit

Let’s use the first 21 days of 2022 to form a meditation practice that will serve us throughout the entire year.

What does it feel like inside your mind right now? Do your thoughts run wild throughout your day? Do you feel like you don’t have any control over what happens inside your mind?

Meditation can absolutely help us clear our minds more efficiently, but it can also help us cope with, and even reframe any distressing, pervasive thinking.

Do you feel like you CAN’T meditate? Well, let me ask you this: Can you think of any time in your life when you felt completely absorbed in a task? (your work? your studies? your yard work?) Perhaps it was something enjoyable, or something repetitive (folding laundry? going for a run?). And when you were absorbed in this tasks, do you remember having a feeling of forgetting everything else? A sense of time moving more quickly? It feels really good when we stumble upon these moments of meditation in our everyday lives, right? Those moments of being completely absorbed ARE a state of meditation. We all CAN do it. However, when we sit down to TRY to meditate, oftentimes our mind picks back up its incessant chatter.

We know we WANT to get into a state of meditation, and we WANT to have that feeling of timelessness, but anything worth doing takes practice. Through this program we’ll create the routine, and train our brains to find stillness (just like you train your abs at the gym). There’s also power in togetherness. So, let’s let’s do this together, and support each other in our commitment to cultivating more peace and ease in our inner worlds. What could be more important than that?

What to expect

Week 1:

Find Your Rhythm

Learn to guide yourself into a state of meditation through simple cues you can easily learn and repeat each time you sit down to meditate.

Week 2:

Refine Your Intention

Now that you’ve found your rhythm, and feel more comfortable entering a state of meditation, you can begin to clarify and refine your intention for meditating. How we approach our meditation will impact what we receive from the practice.

Week 3:

Discover Your Center

Now that you’ve learned how to enter a state of meditation, and you’ve settled into your intention, learn to center, and re-center as you lengthen sitting time, and cultivate stillness and inner-peace.

Register for the Challenge

Each week includes 6 pre-recorded meditations you can practice at your own pace. Choose a time that works best for you. The 7th meditation each week will be “live” with Amy on a Zoom call at 7am. You can join in live, or you can watch the recording of the live meditation practice anytime.

No experience required. No special equipment required. Listen in from any device.

Starting January 2nd through 22nd. $48 to join

The Wheel of Life is a visual representation of 12 areas of your life. It is a tool that is used to understand and recognize which areas of your life feel out of balance and how to guide yourself into more alignment. As we end the first month in the new year, we will tackle the idea of health not just physically but emotionally and mentally as well. Each participant will identify what health means to them and create action steps to utilize in the coming months.

This workshop is a blend of a 50 minute yoga flow and post-yoga meditation and coaching session.

During the workshop you will
*Work through the wheel of life focused on health
*Move through a yoga class & meditation focused on setting the tone for a healthy start to the new year
*Identify how this area of life is impacted by others and devise an action plan in order to enhance it.

You will also receive tools for your own guided journaling.
