November 2024 at Oyster Bay Yoga

Gratitude

Dear Yogis,

Happy November. This month our sutra of the month is 2.33, where Patanjali offers us the tool of pratipaksha bhavanam. In my opinion, one of the most practical suggestions in all of the yoga sutras. “When disturbed by negative thoughts, opposite [positive] ones should be thought of.” Satchidananda speaks about not only changing your thoughts, but changing your environment as being particularly effective in releasing disturbed thinking patterns. Try physically moving to a different location, and feel the shift in your inner environment (get to the studio, go for a walk, go to the beach). Or maybe, switch up who you’re surrounded by and feel the influence of those people (phone a friend, get a date on the calendar with people you love to be around and let their energy infect you in the best way possible. What does this have to do with gratitude? Gratitude takes practice, but when we’re doing it right, it creates strong emotion within us. I encourage you to write down what you’re grateful for, but take it one step further, and let the emotion of gratitude burn away negative thoughts that cause us stress. This month, come see us at the studio, it’s still the best way I know to practice pratipaksha bhavanam and cultivate peaceful thoughts.

All the best,
Amy

Sutra of the Month

Sutra 2.33 from Patanjali's Yoga Sutras introduces the concept of Pratipaksha Bhavana, which is the practice of cultivating opposite thoughts when negative or harmful thoughts arise. This sutra encourages replacing emotions like anger, jealousy, or greed with positive, uplifting qualities such as love, compassion, and generosity. By consciously choosing opposing thoughts, we can neutralize negativity and create a more balanced, peaceful state of mind. This practice is essential for personal growth and aligning with the principles of yoga.

Intention

Dear Yogis,

Happy September! As summertime winds down and we settle back into a collective routine. Maybe it’s back to business, back to school, back to your practice, or starting something completely new! It can be a great time to check in with yourself so that the routine doesn’t overrule what means most to you. You can try this brief exercise, either written down or just in your head.

It’s nice to do before you begin your practice or before you go to bed at night:

  1. Describe to yourself where you are physically right now.

  2. Identify any feelings that are with you in the present moment.

  3. Can you identify the peaks and valleys of the past few months?

  4. Which of these moments generated feelings you’d like to bring with you into this new season, and into the rest of your year? Which moments generated feelings you’d like to leave behind?

  5. In your peaks, what allowed those moments to feel like they did? Was it related to a goal or sense of pride in yourself? Or people you were with? Or something else entirely?

  6. What feelings do you want to embody so that you can create more space for these moments in the coming months?

All the best,
Amy

Sutra of the Month

Sutra 2.16, from Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, states that future pain and suffering can be prevented through mindfulness, disciplined practice, and self-awareness. By living consciously and making choices aligned with a clear, balanced mind, we can reduce the potential for future suffering.

This teaches us the importance of proactive living. It reminds us that while we can't change the past, we have the power to influence the future by cultivating awareness in the present. Through yoga, meditation, and mindful actions, we develop the inner strength to break harmful cycles, preventing unnecessary pain from arising. This sutra encourages us to take responsibility for our lives and embrace practices that foster inner peace and well-being, reducing the impact of future challenges.

August is the quietest month of every year at the studio (and at every gym, health club or other fitness center in the country). We take vacation, the kids are off school and camp, it’s beach weather and social time with friends and family, and it’s a common time to fall out of your yoga practice. I say, never skip an opportunity to take a beach day when you can, but do notice if that one practice you missed led to complete abandonment of your routine so that in October you’re left scratching your head as to where your practice has gone! Don’t forget, we’re here for in-person and virtual classes, too (don’t forget to bring your travel mat on vacation)! And, as added incentive, we’ve got a fun BINGO challenge to help you stick with it through the summer. Check it out below!

All the best,
Amy

Pose of the Month

Ardha Chandrasana: Half Moon

This month at the studio we breakdown
Ardha Chandrasana: Half Moon.
Learn how best to practice this pose in any class all month long!

Sutra of the Month

In Sutra 2.46 of Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, it emphasizes the qualities of a proper yoga posture (asana). It can be translated as "the posture should be steady (sthira) and comfortable (sukham)." This means that while practicing yoga postures, one should find a balance between effort and ease. The posture should be stable and firm, yet it should also feel relaxed and enjoyable. The idea is to maintain physical steadiness without strain, allowing the mind to remain calm and focused. This principle helps practitioners develop a harmonious connection between the body and mind, which is essential for deeper meditation and inner peace.

Oil of the Month

Our August OOTM is:

Lemongrass

“Looking for an essential oil that’s powerfully lemony, fresh, and invigorating? You've found it. Lemongrass Essential Oil can create an uplifting atmosphere in your living space. When you’re needing an emotional boost during challenging times of your life, Lemongrass is a wonderful addition to diffuser blends or to diffuse on its own. It can also help alleviate discomfort in muscle aches, boost circulation, or add warmth to indigestion problems. And last but not least, this essential oil provides great use for when you’re spending time outdoors, keeping annoyances at bay.” -Plant Therapy

Enjoy 20% off your purchase of Lemongrass essential oil all month at the studio.

Pelvic Floor Portal & Women’s Circle

Sunday, September 22nd
5:00-7:00pm
with Eliza Tappan

The female pelvis is a portal of mystery and transformation. It stores our traumas and our deepest longings and potential for joy, release, and empowerment. It is the space where pain can be alchemized into pleasure. This workshop is designed to lay the physical, emotional, and practical foundation for women looking to change their relationship with their power center.

The workshop begins with guided movement and a short women’s circle, because when women share their voices and their hearts, real magic unfolds. The workshop will continue with:

Experiential Anatomy: Identifying & palpating the external bony structures of the pelvis. Learning the muscles and supporting muscles of the pelvic floor. If you can envision the parts of the body you’re working with, it will transform your practice and daily experience of your own pelvis.

Breathwork: Increasing sensation. Using breath to both activate and release your pelvic floor.

Muscular Release: Using a therapy ball (free gift for attending) to perform muscular release techniques for your pelvic diaphragm and supporting muscle groups.

Nervous System Integration: Practices to tone and regulate your vagus nerve, directly impacting the pelvic floor.

Pilates: Integrating your new tools and awarenesses into a pilates-inspired flow. Your exercise, movement, and daily life is meant to be more enjoyable and pleasureful!

Tapas

Dear Yogis,

Happy July!
Embrace the energy of the season by cultivating some tapas in your practice; one of Patanjali’s Niyamas, or “observances.” The dedicated yogi can practice tapas, which means discipline, austerity or “burning enthusiasm.” Take your passion for your yoga practice, and let it help you burn away physical and mental blocks on your path to uniting with your spiritual highest self!

All my best,
Amy

Pose of the Month

Vasisthasana: Side Plank

This month at the studio we breakdown
Vasisthasana: Side Plank.
Learn how best to practice this pose in any class all month long!

Sutra of the Month

Sutra 2.1 from Patanjali's Yoga Sutras outlines the concept of Kriya Yoga, which serves as the practical foundation for self-discipline and spiritual growth. This sutra states, "Tapas svadhyaya ishvara pranidhana kriya yoga," meaning the path of yoga involves self-discipline (tapas), self-study (svadhyaya), and devotion to a higher power (ishvara pranidhana).

Tapas refers to the disciplined effort and dedication necessary to purify the body and mind, fostering resilience and inner strength. Svadhyaya involves the study of sacred texts and self-reflection to gain a deeper understanding of oneself and one's place in the universe. Ishvara pranidhana encourages surrendering the ego and cultivating a sense of devotion and trust in a higher power, allowing one to move beyond personal limitations. Together, these three practices form a comprehensive approach to overcoming obstacles and achieving a balanced, harmonious state of being.

Sutra of the Month

Sutra 2.39 of Patanjali's Yoga Sutras states: "Aparigrahasthairye janmakathantā saṁbodhaḥ," which translates to, "When the yogi is firmly established in non-possessiveness (aparigraha), there arises knowledge of the why and how of past and future lives." This sutra emphasizes the importance of practicing aparigraha, which means non-possessiveness or non-greed. By letting go of attachments to material possessions and desires, a yogi can gain deeper insights into their life. This detachment fosters a clearer understanding of one's true nature and the underlying causes and effects of past and future experiences. In essence, when one is free from the clutter of possessions and the desire for more, the mind becomes more attuned to deeper spiritual truths and the greater journey of the soul. This understanding helps the yogi to see the interconnectedness of life and the continuity of their spiritual journey across lifetimes.

One Pose at a Time: A Morgan Wallen Tribute

Friday, June 14th
6:30-7:30pm
with Diane Lucchese

The title is a nod to Morgan Wallen’s album “One Thing At A time”. We will flow mindfully to Morgan Wallen’s music with a few other artists mixed in as well. We will take it pose by pose to really learn and integrate the asanas.

I was never a country music fan until my daughter introduced me to Morgan Wallen a few years ago. His roots are in country but songs cross over to mainstream music and he’s even collaborated with hip hop artists and EDM musicians.

After a visit to Nashville, my eyes and ears were opened to some of the most naturally talented vocalists and musicians in the world. The music in Nashville ranges from country to rock and pop and more. Musicians come from all over the country to Nashville to hone their craft and make it in the music industry.
