January 2024 at Oyster Bay Yoga

Beginner’s Mind

Dear Oyster Bay Yogis,

Happy January! Happy New Year! As we’re starting this year fresh, let’s return to the Buddhist practice of a “beginner’s mind.” When you arrive on your mat each time this month, remember what it felt like to begin practicing yoga (or any other wellness/contemplative practice). You didn’t know what you didn’t know, and that led to some unique feelings of nervousness, excitement, curiosity & delight as you explored new movements, breathwork and meditation techniques. Can you channel those feelings again, and begin to see your practice with fresh eyes?

Consider taking one of our Yoga Roots classes - where we always practice the fundamentals, a great place to start, and a great place to start again if you’ve fallen out of your practice through the holiday season.

Brand new to yoga? Check out our monthly Beginning Yoga Workshop on 1/28.

Been with us for years? Please, take a moment to fill out our annual survey - your feedback about the class schedule, our offerings, and the studio in general are so important to us.

Check out the rest of our great workshops and offerings this month below.

All my best wishes to you and your family for a happy, healthy 2024.

Namaste,

Amy

Sutra of the Month

Within every achievement, desire stands as the driving force. The vigor of your desire becomes the determining factor in the ease of reaching your goals, shaping your ability to overcome obstacles and reflecting your character. Understanding your inclinations and establishing a clear goal provides the roadmap to discover the level of intensity that renders the journey both enjoyable and sustainable. According to Patanjali, determination manifests at various levels within one's practice. Each day on the mat unfolds uniquely; some days call for a robust practice, while others invite rest and recovery. Regardless of our current stance, we are all progressing in the right direction. Consistent, steady effort proves to be the linchpin, emphasizing the importance of regularity over the intensity of your practice.

Oil of the Month

Our January OOTM is:

December 2023 at Oyster Bay Yoga

Rest

Dear Oyster Bay Yogis,

Happy December! Go EASY on yourself. I hope you can continue to take some time out of your busy holiday/end-of-year schedule for a little bit of rest, it’s our theme of the month! As an added incentive, this month in my classes we’ll be taking extended savasana. Don’t worry, if savasana is the hardest posture for you, We’ll be guiding you through some relaxation techniques so your busy mind has something non-stressful to chew on.

Consider what you might need to receive from your practice this time of year. It’s ok to let your practice grow, or slow, or change WITH you. That’s what will help sustain us, and keep us coming back. Take some time to reflect on what you’ve accomplished this year on your mat - thank yourself for each and every conscious breath! And, if the people you love the most in this world are annoying you through the holidays - leave your house, skip down to the studio for an hour, and come back to your breath. Nothing makes me happier than to see you get your break for the day within our 4 walls. Thanks for filling our space with your smiling face these past 12 months. Cheers to a happy, healthy 2024!

See you on the mat,

Amy

Pose of the Month

Viparita Karani: Legs Up the Wall

This month at the studio we breakdown
Viparita Karani: Legs Up the Wall.

Sutra of the Month

Patanjali's teachings in Sutra 2.5 emphasizes the concept of avoiding future suffering or pain. It suggests that through the practice of yoga, individuals can prevent or mitigate suffering that might arise in the future. The implication is that by living a life in alignment with yogic principles, one can reduce the causes of suffering and lead a more harmonious and fulfilling existence.

In this sutra, Patanjali introduces the concept of "klesas," which are mental and emotional obstacles that can disturb the balance of the mind. He identifies five primary klesas as ignorance (avidya), egoism (asmita), attachment (raga), aversion (dvesa), and fear of death (abhinivesah). The Yoga Sutras emphasize that these klesas are the sources of suffering and that by recognizing them and working to overcome them through yoga practice, individuals can attain a state of mental clarity, tranquility, and liberation from suffering. The practice of yoga, including ethical guidelines, asanas (postures), pranayama (breath control), and meditation, is aimed at reducing the influence of these klesas and achieving a state of self-realization and inner peace.

November 2023 at Oyster Bay Yoga

Gratitude

Dear Oyster Bay Yogis,

Happy November. This month our sutra of the month is 2.33, where Patanjali offers us the tool of pratipaksha bhavanam. In my opinion, one of the most practical suggestions in all of the yoga sutras. “When disturbed by negative thoughts, opposite [positive] ones should be thought of.” Satchidananda speaks about not only changing your thoughts, but changing your environment as being particularly effective in releasing disturbed thinking patterns. Try physically moving to a different location, and feel the shift in your inner environment (get to the studio, go for a walk, go to the beach). Or maybe, switch up who you’re surrounded by and feel the influence of those people (phone a friend, get a date on the calendar with people you love to be around and let their energy infect you in the best way possible. What does this have to do with gratitude? Gratitude takes practice, but when we’re doing it right, it creates strong emotion within us. I encourage you to write down what you’re grateful for, but take it one step further, and let the emotion of gratitude burn away negative thoughts that cause us stress. This month, come see us at the studio, it’s still the best way I know to practice pratipaksha bhavanam and cultivate peaceful thoughts.

See you on the mat,

Amy

Eka Pada Galavasana: Flying Pigeon

This month at the studio we breakdown
Eka Pada Galavasana: Flying Pigeon.
Learn how best to practice this pose in any class all month long!

Sutra of the Month

Patanjali's teachings in Sutra 2.33 emphasizes the practice of substituting negative thoughts with positive ones when the mind becomes disturbed or overwhelmed by undesirable, harmful, or unwholesome thoughts. In essence, it encourages individuals to consciously replace negative thinking patterns with constructive positive ones. This practice helps maintain mental clarity and emotional balance, ultimately contributing to a state of well-being and inner peace.

Touch the Ground: Ayurvedic Half Day Retrat

Sunday, November 5th
12:00-4:00pm
with Nancy Rich

Journey into the world of Ayurveda and learn how to heal and stayed balanced this season through our five senses with Nancy Rich, ERYT-500, Ayurvedic Health Counselor, Ayurvedic Yoga Therapist and graduate of The California College of Ayurveda. Delight in a blissful, half day retreat filled with Ayurvedic education, including: seasonal diet and herbs, aromatherapy, chromotherapy and other sense therapy practices.  Enjoy a grounding afternoon of slow yoga, pranayama (breath practice), yoga nidra, nourishing lunch and treats to take home.

As the heat of the summer dwindles and the chill of autumn sets in, the leaves dry and fall from the trees as we welcome the onset of the Ayurvedic season of Vata. Ayurveda is a complete medical science that is derived from the same teachings as yoga and aimed at healing imbalances with the body and mind. The qualities of Vata season are much like those of autumn and early winter -cold, dry, rough, windy and  erratic, as they are both governed by the elements air and space. The aggravating dry and cold qualities of the season often lead to imbalances such as skin issues, constipation, arthritis, insomnia, mood swings, anxiety and excess mental chatter, preventing us from fully enjoying the beauty of the season.

Simple changes in our seasonal routine can make all the difference in grounding and balancing in the fall and winter months.

Please dress in cozy layers and bring a yoga mat, pillow and journal.

Touch the Ground: Ayurvedic Half Day Retreat

August 2023 at Oyster Bay Yoga

Balance

Dear Oyster Bay Yogis,

Happy August! As soon as I hear the word August, I automatically think, “oh no, the end of the summer!” I feel that pressure to make the most of the great weather, and all of the opportunities for activity, travel, family & friendship it brings. And at the same time, I start to kick myself for falling out of routine with my self care. It’s a catch 22! Remember, the studio will always be here for you. Our collective special place to gather and take care of our bodies and minds. You’re not alone if the end of the summer forces you out of routine, so this month, let’s focus on balance! Literally, we’ll work on some standing balance postures, and let’s think balance off the mat, too. Find some yin to your summer yang, or vice versa. If you always take vigorous vinyasa classes, consider a more restful or gentle class. If your schedule’s booked with summertime fun, pop onto a livestream while you’re traveling.

See you on the mat,

Amy

Sutra of the Month

Yoga Sutra 2.46, also known as "Sthira Sukham Asanam," is a profound verse from the ancient Indian text, Patanjali's Yoga Sutras. In this sutra, Patanjali emphasizes the essence of yoga postures, or asanas. He advises practitioners to find the perfect balance between steadiness (Sthira) and ease (Sukham) in their poses. It encourages us to maintain a sense of stability and strength while simultaneously experiencing a state of comfort and relaxation. This balance not only enhances the physical practice of yoga but also fosters harmony between the body, mind, and spirit. Sutra 2.46 serves as a guiding principle for yogis worldwide, reminding us to approach our practice with grace, mindfulness, and an awareness of the interconnectedness within ourselves and the world around us.
