Balance

august 2021 newsletter balance osyter bay yoga

Hello Oyster Bay Yogis,

Time is flying and I hope that means you’re all having some summer fun! Our theme of the month for August is “Balance,” and I’d like us to take this both literally and figuratively. I like to think about balance over the long haul. Some days are a perfect slice of how we imagine life should be, and some days are…not. But each day we get up and try again. I like to think about my yoga practice over the long haul as well. When I first began practicing yoga, my enthusiasm made up for my lack of skill, maturity, and finesse. A race to the handstands and backbends, and as it turns out, some aches and overuse. As I traveled through the stages of my life, my practice changed. I got better at the postures, the breathwork, and meditation independently. Progress was not a straight line, but it was certainly correlated with the enthusiasm and vigor and frequency with which I practiced over time. But more importantly progress came with refinement, steadiness, and very close attention. And then when I look back I see the way my understanding went deeper instead of wider. What more can I learn about the things I already think I know everything about?

Don’t forget to dig down each time you come to your mat. Deep understanding of a few basic postures, breathing and meditation techniques will take you a LONG way, and a LONG time. Yoga is a lifelong endeavor. And you’ll see the tools of yoga that we practice on our mat develop deeper and deeper roots over time so that balancing in tree pose, and balancing the events of our lives feel more manageable with each passing year. Those roots will give you the foundation you need through it all. Namaste,

Amy

In the remainder of our newsletter you’ll see our Pose of the Month, Sutra of the Month, Oil of the Month, and Monthly Challenge Winner for July. Plus a full listing of the upcoming events. I look forward to seeing you again at the studio very soon.

Pose of the Month

Padmasana: Lotus Pose

Ah, lotus pose. How graceful it looks pasted on the cover of magazines and advertisements. But be careful about grasping too tightly for the final shape, or the expense will be soar knees and hips. Think about the long haul of your practice. And be patient, but steadfast in your approach.

Sutra of the Month

This month, let’s see if we can find that little slice of balance between effort and ease in our postures, in our minds, and in our lives!

Build Resilience

resilience oyster bay yoga july 2021 newsletter

Hello Oyster Bay Yogis,

Happy July! Lately I’ve been thinking about the benefits of yoga. I think most of us begin practicing yoga for the physical benefits: better flexibility, improved strength, recovery from injury, and also stress relief. I’ve also been thinking about my own practice over time, and how it’s changed, and how it’s changed me. I believe the biggest benefit I’ve received from 15 years of practice is resilience. That feeling of being able to bounce back. Bounce back from little injuries, and big. Bounce back from hard times, and difficult conversations. It’s remarkable how many of us are LIFELONG practitioners of yoga. I’ve seen plenty of students come and go, but there are A LOT of us that stick with this wonderful practice year after year. I know I’ve gone through stages where my passion fades a bit, but I bounce back there, too. And one of the happiest sights I see is the smile on your faces when you walk back in the door after having been away from your practice for a little while. Welcome hOMe.

In the remainder of our newsletter you’ll see our Pose of the Month, Sutra of the Month, Oil of the Month, and Monthly Challenge Winner for May. Plus a full listing of the upcoming events. I look forward to seeing you again at the studio very soon.

Be well,

Amy

Pose of the Month

Vrksasana: Tree Pose

This one will TEST your resilience. Use it as a training ground for the rest of your life. If it’s challenging for you, GREAT. If it’s easy for you, make it harder!

Sutra of the Month

sutra 1.30 slipping from ground gained sutra of the month oyster bay yoga

At this point in the yoga sutras, Patanjali has just finished telling us about transcendence, and awakening to your inner self. And now, he’s noting the obstacles on our path to samadhi. Of particular importance to me, in the context of our monthly theme of resilience, is the failure to reach firm ground, and the slipping from ground gained. Swami Satchidananda’s interpretation always makes me feel better, when I find myself right back where I started. I’ll share it with you this month in our classes.

Pop Up Therapy Ball Class

therapy ball class pilates self massage

Sunday, July 25th

10:45am

with Eliza Tappan

Therapy balls are a great (and in my book, must-have) tool for taking care of your body AND getting the most out of your workouts. I first became familiar with using therapy balls as a dancer. If I have very little time to get my body ready for movement I’m going to do two things: warm up my core, and roll out my feet. Then, through studying Pilates and anatomy, my understanding of what I was actually doing with the therapy ball deepened, and took my body care practices to a new level, incorporating release of both mental and physical stress.

In this workshop, we will combine a Pilates movement practice with some basic anatomy and simple techniques to release and lengthen muscles using a therapy ball, leaving your musculoskeletal system more pliable and better equipped to naturally take care of itself. We know that when you are stressed, muscles tense up. You can de-stress and release the mind and body with a brain-to-body approach (think breathing and mindfulness exercises), and you can also release mind and body with a body-to-brain approach (think getting a massage, or the self-massage tools you’ll learn in this workshop!). These are practices you can do at home or on the go, to reset your body and nervous system at any point in the day.

Breathe Deep

breathe oyster bay yoga june 2021

Hello Oyster Bay Yogis,

Happy June! I mentioned to a few of you that as soon as we got the OK to safely remove our masks at the studio, we’d do a pranayama-themed month. And here we are! We are now operating as “mask optional” for those of you that are vaccinated. And this month we’ll explore more deeply one of the limbs of yoga that sometimes gets overshadowed by asana (postures): pranayama (breathwork)!

Prana = breath, vitality Yama = control, regulation.” Prana is the cosmic force without which nothing moves or functions.” -Swami Satchidananda. When we practice pranayama, or breath control, we practice channeling this energy to revitalize ourselves physically, mentally, and spiritually. Pranayama is also a gateway into deeper states of meditation and I look forward to hearing about your experiences with it this month! As with our asana practice, listen to your internal cues over any cue an instructor gives, and approach your pranayama practice mindfully and slowly.

We’ll discuss sutras 2.49-2.53 where Patanjali expands on the practice of pranayama in class this month, and Martha will be sharing her wisdom with us in a Pop-Up Pranayama class on Sunday 6/13 in Oyster Bay.

We have got two GREAT workshops for you this month as well. Yoga Nidra with Nancy on Friday 6/11 in Oyster Bay, and Transformational Breath with Rebecca Parker on Sunday 6/27 in Glen Cove. Scroll down for more info, and register early, they’re both sure to sell out.

In the remainder of our newsletter you’ll see our Pose of the Month, Sutra of the Month, Oil of the Month, and Monthly Challenge Winner for May. Plus a full listing of the upcoming events. I look forward to seeing you again at the studio very soon.

Be well,

Amy

Transformational Breath Workshop

transformational breath rebecca parker oyster bay yoga

As humans, we rarely make use of one of the simplest things on earth - the breath. Breathwork is an active meditation which allows breathers to release the chatter of the mind and to become present within the body releasing tension, fear, physical and emotional ailments. In this class Rebecca will hold space for the group to experience whatever comes up.

Breathwork opens up our channels to our inner-knowing, to receiving, and gives us access to perspectives that we were never aware of. The body's process for oxygenating and sustaining life in every cell of our bodies is so automatic that it can be deceptive, but it's one of the most powerful tools for healing, relaxation, and bridging the gap between your mind and body.

You will be guided through a simple rhythmic breath pattern and through that process you will have an opportunity to be in your body in a way like you have never experienced before. The benefits are life-changing, by connecting with your own body's healing power the results are quite instant.

Breathwork is a tool you can add to your "tool kit" and use on a daily basis, outside of class. Come open minded to try something new, and expect to leave feeling lighter and more in tune with your body and spirit.

To attend virtually: please have a space where you can lay flat, and you will not be disturbed.

Optional: Throw blanket, eye mask or eye pillow, and crystals you are working with.

Instructor: Rebecca Parker

Rebecca is originally from Long Island, NY. After struggling with depression, anxiety, and as a product of this various physical ailments she began searching for wholistic healing tools and found Breathwork and its profound affects. The breath allowed her to release stuck energy within the body, heal physical ailments, and process unprocessed emotion. In 2017 she began her company Creating Space (www.creatingspacewellness.com).

As a Breathwork facilitator, she is focused on creating a light-hearted, fun and supportive environment. She applauds her clients showing up for themselves and being open. Her goal is for her clients to leave feeling lighter, clearer and more connected to spirit. It is her belief that there is inner light and healing energy within within each of us.
